Salto del pastor is a technique for moving through steep terrain using a lance or pole. Together with lucha del garrote or bola canaria, it forms part of a set of bodily practices that reflect ways of life adapted to island orography.[1]

Practice and context

This pastoral practice allowed shepherds to move quickly across slopes, ravines and difficult terrain, using a pole as a support point and lever. Its current survival depends on associations and schools that keep it as intangible heritage.[1]
