Lucha canaria is a grappling sport with deep popular roots and strong identity value. Its history runs through rural society in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, attempts at inter-island unification and the shaping of rules that balance tradition and modern competition.[1]
The studies of Antonio Ayala (1977) and the chronicles of Marrero Hernández (1948) offer a historical view of the championships, figures and federative tensions that marked the development of this practice during the twentieth century.[1][2]
Juego del palo
Juego del palo is a traditional stick-fencing practice linked to the pastoral and rural world. Its study combines the analysis of techniques, the recovery of technical vocabulary and the relationship with other stick games in the Atlantic and Mediterranean sphere.[1][2]
Salto del pastor and other practices
Salto del pastor is a technique for moving through steep terrain using a lance or pole. Together with lucha del garrote or bola canaria, it forms part of a set of bodily practices that reflect ways of life adapted to island orography.[1]
