Alegranza forms part of the Chinijo Archipelago alongside La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste. [1]
At the eastern tip of the islet, Punta Delgada Lighthouse first shone in 1865. Designed by Juan de León y Castillo, it formed part of the first maritime lighting plan for the Canary Islands. Its building could accommodate two lighthouse keepers’ families for extended stays. The complex was designated a protected cultural monument in 2002. [2]
The lighthouse also holds a family story. Agustín Pallarés arrived on Alegranza at the age of nine, when his father was posted there between 1937 and 1944. That childhood shaped the future researcher and chronicler, who later became a lighthouse keeper himself and requested a posting on the same islet. [2]
