Islote de Fermina, formerly known as Islote del Quebrado, lies by the El Reducto beach area. Its name commemorates Fermina Santana Santana, a businesswoman and shipowner associated with shipbuilding in Arrecife. [1]
In 1918, Fermina Santana received permission from the naval authorities to establish a shipyard on what was then called Islote del Quebrado. Vessels built there included the sloop La Fermina and El Rafael. The present name preserves the memory of maritime work and of a businesswoman involved in Arrecife’s port life. [1]
César Manrique’s work in the 1970s added another chapter to its history. A footbridge linked the site to the shore, and the name Islote del Amor also became popular. Following restoration, it houses the Arrecife Bay Interpretation Centre, devoted to the city’s relationship with its maritime surroundings. [1]
