Roque del Oeste and Montaña Clara lie northwest of La Graciosa. Both are part of the Los Islotes Strict Nature Reserve, which also includes Roque del Este. [1]
Together with Montaña Clara, this small outcrop lies about two kilometres northwest of La Graciosa. Its protection grew from calls to conserve Chinijo, with the inhabitants of La Graciosa playing a particularly active role. The natural park was designated in 1986 and the strict nature reserve in 1994. [1]
Since Lanzarote’s designation as a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, Roque del Oeste has belonged to its core areas. The 2006 management plan placed it alongside Roque del Este in the reserve’s exclusion zone because of its fragile natural features, with scientific and conservation access subject to regulation.
