The 2006 management plan defines the Los Islotes Strict Nature Reserve along the perimeters of Montaña Clara, Roque del Oeste and Roque del Este, measured from the lowest astronomical tide line. [1]
Montaña Clara lies about two kilometres northwest of La Graciosa. Its 137.8 hectares make up most of the reserve’s total area of 165.2 hectares. Conservation initiatives began in 1983, followed by the natural park designation in 1986; the strict nature reserve was established in 1994. [1]
When Lanzarote became a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, Montaña Clara and the two rocks were included in its core areas to preserve relatively undisturbed ecosystems. The 2006 management plan even proposed acquiring Montaña Clara as a key conservation measure. [1]
