Nicolás Estévanez Murphy

Nicolás Estévanez Murphy was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 17 February 1838. He died in Paris on 19 August 1914. He was a military officer, federal republican politician, writer and poet.

He took part in the Revolution of 1868 and developed a public career linked to the republicanism of the Democratic Sexennium and the First Republic. In 1873 he was Minister of War. His parliamentary and ministerial trajectory belongs to the broader history of Spanish republicanism.

From Paris he contributed to Revista de Canarias, a periodical published in Tenerife between 1878 and 1882. Its pages brought together scientific studies and writing on law and politics. His contributions connect his work as a writer with a forum for intellectual exchange in the archipelago, alongside his republican career.
