Nicolás Estévanez Murphy

Nicolás Estévanez Murphy was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 17 February 1838. He died in Paris on 19 August 1914. The Real Academia de la Historia presents him as a military officer, federal republican politician, writer and poet.

He took part in the Revolution of 1868 and developed a public career linked to the republicanism of the Democratic Sexennium and the First Republic. In 1873 he was Minister of War. His parliamentary and ministerial trajectory belongs to the broader history of Spanish republicanism.

Estévanez belongs to the history of nineteenth-century Spanish republicanism and to Canarian political memory through his birth in Las Palmas and his public career.
