The Tibicenas

The chronicles record the Gran Canarian belief in demonic beings that appeared in the form of very large, shaggy dogs, called Tibicenas. The sources indicate that this belief was exclusive to Gran Canaria and responded to a way of imagining evil and the supernatural on the island.[1]

Gómez Escudero records that the devil appeared to them in the form of a very large, shaggy dog, by night and by day, and in several other forms, which they called Tibicenas. The description combines the animal and the supernatural, a frequent device in Atlantic cosmologies.[1]
