María Padrón

She was born in Gran Canaria to a family of El Hierro origin and maintained a continuous relationship with El Hierro from adolescence. She divided her life between Gran Canaria and Tesbabo in El Mocanal (Valverde), a setting that became part of her poetic imagination and photographic work.

She published more than twenty poetry books. Con la voz del viento (1987), Eres la isla de las islas (1988), La última tierra (2004), Materia de isla (2010), Un tacto de universo (2011), El mar sin nombre (2014) and Todo hombre es el hombre (2017) trace writing attentive to nature, the sea, the passage of time and human traces in the territory.

Her work received, among other distinctions, the Sala de Arte Garoé Prize in 1988, an honourable mention at the Isla de El Hierro competition in 1989 and Italy's Rosón de Oro in 1992. The Biblioteca de Canarias and the Centro de Documentación de Canarias y América have kept her work in their outreach resources, highlighting both her connection with El Hierro and her place in contemporary Canarian poetry.
