Pedro de Vera promotes the introduction of sugar cane to Gran Canaria.

After the conquest of Gran Canaria, governor Pedro de Vera promoted the arrival of sugar cane in 1483 and later brought specialist sugar workers from Madeira. The crop and the first mills transformed the use of land and water and opened the sugar cycle of the Canarian colonial economy. This date replaces the imprecise archipelago-wide milestone of 1500.
