Pedro Eugenio Moreno "Xayo"

Pedro Eugenio Moreno, Xayo, was born in Santa María de Guía, Gran Canaria, in 1952. Journalistic and municipal sources present him as a Gran Canarian comedian and drag performer linked to the entertainment world from the beginning of Spain’s democratic transition in 1977.

His career unfolded in venues, carnivals, popular festivals and stages across the Canary Islands. Santa María de Guía’s municipal memory stresses his relationship with the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival, his presence throughout the archipelago and his identity as an artist from Guía associated with the San Roque neighbourhood. In 2019 he gained renewed national visibility through Got Talent 5, where Dani Martínez and Paz Padilla gave him the golden buzzer to the semifinals.

Xayo’s public importance is not limited to comedy. The consulted sources remember him as a reference for drag performance in the Canary Islands and as a figure of visibility for the LGBTI community. After his death in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 24 March 2021, Santa María de Guía kept his memory alive through the Festival del Humor Xayo, a mural tribute linked to International LGBTI Pride Day and the posthumous distinction of Favourite Son of the municipality.
