Manolo Vieira

Manuel Vieira Montesdeoca was born on 18 May 1949 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and was closely tied from early life to the La Isleta district, one of the city’s great popular settings. From that world came a recognisable kind of humour: spoken stories with conversational rhythm, familiar characters and parodies in which audiences could recognise themselves.

On stage, Manolo Vieira turned that urban and family memory into a long career. The Boletín Oficial de Canarias awarded him the Canary Islands Gold Medal in 2002, stressing the breadth of his artistic work and his ability to involve audiences. After his death, the Canary Islands Government recalled four decades of activity inside and outside the archipelago and his farewell tour, La última y nos vamos.

His public importance is also linked to his defence of Canarian Spanish. In his monologues, turns of phrase, tones and ways of speaking that often remained outside formal registers moved to the centre of the stage, transformed into comic material and a shared marker of identity.
