Lothar Siemens Hernández

Lothar Siemens Hernández was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 16 August 1941. He died in the same city on 28 February 2017. The University Library of the ULPGC records his studies in Philosophy and Letters, his specialisation in Musicology, Ethnology and Prehistory at the University of Hamburg, and his doctorate in Art History and Musicology from the University of La Laguna in 2003.

His career combined composition, musicological research and institutional work. He directed publications such as Revista de Musicología and Vector Plus, chaired the Spanish Society of Musicology from 2007 to 2014, and founded the Musicology Department of El Museo Canario, which he supplied with scores by Canarian authors and a sound archive.

His work addressed music in the Canary Islands and documentation projects such as Proyecto RALS. In 2005 he donated his private collection to the ULPGC University Library, forming the basis of the Biblioteca Musicológica Lothar Siemens. His distinctions include the 2005 Gold Medal of the Canary Islands Government, the 2014 Canary Islands Prize for Historical Heritage and the 2016 ULPGC Medal.
