Concha Jerez

Concha Jerez's career belongs to the first Spanish generation associated with conceptual art. The Museo Reina Sofía places the start of her site-specific interventions in 1976 and stresses the intermedia nature of many projects, where text, image, sound, objects, action and space converge.

Her work has persistently addressed censorship, memory and dominant discourses. This research line accounts for both her installations and her sound and radio-art work, developed in dialogue with José Iges. Her work is held by the Museo Reina Sofía.

Spain's Ministry of Culture awarded her the National Prize for Fine Arts in 2015; she received the Velázquez Prize for Fine Arts in 2017 and the Canary Islands Gold Medal in 2018. These awards do not replace an interpretation of her work, but they establish a public chronology of its institutional reception.
