Tomás Gómez Bosch

Gómez Bosch first trained at the Academia Municipal de Las Palmas with Nicolás Massieu y Falcón. From 1901 he attended Eliseo Meifrén's workshop in San Cristóbal, receiving teaching that brought Post-Impressionist references to a generation of young Canarian painters. Between 1904 and 1906 he continued his learning in Madrid, visiting the Prado and engaging with the studios of José Garnelo and Emilio Sala.

On returning to Gran Canaria he took on responsibilities in the family chocolate and beer businesses, which put painting aside for a period. He resumed painting in the early 1930s and held his first solo exhibition at the Gabinete Literario in 1940. His painting focused on portraits, landscapes, seascapes and still lifes, with constant attention to light and colour and a clientele connected with the island's bourgeoisie.

Photography was another essential line of his activity. His Las Palmas studio produced portraits and social, urban and work scenes, largely preserved on glass plates. Casa de Colón staged the exhibition Tomás Gómez Bosch: pintor y fotógrafo in 2008, and FEDAC digitised a set of 780 plates from his archive. This legacy makes it possible to read together his pictorial and documentary gaze on Gran Canaria.
