Miriam Durango

She trained in fine arts in La Laguna and Madrid and, from the mid-1980s, developed an exhibition practice combining the Canary Islands with periods in New York, Germany and the Netherlands. This route expanded her technical and conceptual references and opened research not limited to the painterly support.

Her early work begins with figurative painting close to comics and progresses towards geometric abstraction, pixelation and technological media. Series such as Los planetas, Erewhon, Los jueces and Cuerpo cognitivo articulate concerns about reproducible image, social stereotypes, judgment and the construction of identity. At the end of the 1990s she incorporated video, installation, sound art and digital composition.

Making work coexists with curating, advising and cultural management. The Biblioteca de Artistas de Canarias published a monographic volume on her career in 2023, written by Ángeles Alemán. Its institutional presentation stresses the coherence of work that is difficult to reduce to one movement and sustained by reflection on technique and its social uses.
