Fernando Estévez del Sacramento was a sculptor born in La Orotava in 1788. His religious production and later reception make him one of the central figures of nineteenth-century Canarian sculpture.
Fernando Estévez del Sacramento was born in La Orotava in 1788 and died in San Cristóbal de La Laguna in 1854. He embraced neoclassical tendencies and left works distributed across several islands.
Dated landmarks include the image of the Virgin of Candelaria, made in 1827 for the Candelaria sanctuary, and the Christ for the chapter house of La Laguna Cathedral, made the following year. His works also include Lágrimas de San Pedro and San Juan Bautista in Telde.
His legacy belongs to Canarian religious heritage and the history of art education: the Fernando Estévez School of Art and Design in Santa Cruz de Tenerife bears his name. Some attributions of works remain under study.
