Gonzalo González González

Gonzalo González González was born in La Cruz Santa, Los Realejos, Tenerife, in 1950. He trained in Fine Arts at the University of La Laguna and completed his studies at the Complutense University of Madrid. After a brief period of teaching, he focused his activity on artistic creation.

His work belongs to the context of the Canarian Generation of the 1970s. CAAM and TEA sources highlight a career in painting and sculpture, alongside work as a draughtsman, illustrator, printmaker and stage designer. In 1975 he presented his first solo exhibition at Galería Yles in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with the Homotecas series.

Critical and exhibition catalogues link his early series to themes such as existential solitude, marginality and human drama; later his painting shifted toward landscapes, nature, memory and forms of abstraction. His work has appeared in exhibitions in the Canary Islands, mainland Spain, Europe and the Americas, and is represented in collections including CAAM, TEA, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Parliament of the Canary Islands, the University of La Laguna and the César Manrique Foundation. In 2024 he received the Canary Islands Prize in Fine Arts and Performance.
