Fernando Clavijo Batlle

Fernando Clavijo was born on August 10, 1971, in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a city on the island of Tenerife. He completed his higher education at the University of La Laguna, where he obtained a degree in Economics and Business Administration. Before beginning his political career, he worked in the private sector as a businessman and served as an advisor to the Municipal Musical Activities Organization in his hometown. This professional stage provided him with experience in management and the local business environment prior to taking on public responsibilities.

His political trajectory began at the municipal level in 2003, when he was elected as a councillor in the San Cristóbal de La Laguna City Council. Between 2003 and 2007, he held the position of Councillor for Citizen Security, responsible for coordinating municipal policies related to public safety and order. Subsequently, from 2007 until November 2008, he served as First Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Urban Planning, participating in the management of urban development and municipal planning. In November 2008, he was appointed Mayor of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a position he assumed after his previous experience in various areas of local government. He also held internal roles within his political organization, such as Secretary General of the youth wing and president of the local group in La Laguna.

At the regional level, Fernando Clavijo was elected President of the Government of the Canary Islands in July 2015. His parliamentary election took place on July 6 and 7 of that year, and his official appointment was on July 8. His first term as head of the regional executive ended on July 15, 2019. Subsequently, on July 11 and 12, 2023, he was again elected by the Parliament of the Canary Islands and appointed president on July 13, 2023. According to the Presidency portal, he continues to serve as president as of October 14, 2026.

Between his two presidencies, Clavijo was a senator appointed by the Canary Islands Parliament. His record for the fourteenth national legislature lists his membership of Coalición Canaria and his role as deputy spokesperson of the nationalist parliamentary group from December 2019 to June 2023. He resigned his seat on 26 June 2023 before returning to the regional presidency.

Between his first presidency and his return to office, Law 4/2023 of 23 March on the Presidency and Government of the Canary Islands was adopted. It regulates the position of the president, vice president and ministers, together with the organisation and powers of the government. The president is elected by Parliament and appointed by the King, directs and coordinates the executive’s work and represents the autonomous community. His two appointments therefore belong to different stages in the development of the Canarian institutional framework.
