In 1502 the Lower Town was regularised with main streets, open spaces and a grid organised around Plaza del Adelantado. UNESCO recognises La Laguna as the first unfortified Spanish colonial town whose layout provided a model for many towns in the Americas. This replaces the alleged administrative consolidation of 1526, for which no equivalent dated act was found.
