On 25 September 1992, César Manrique died in a traffic accident in Tahíche, Lanzarote. The artist and architect, born in Arrecife in 1919, had made the defence of his island's landscape his most important work. His legacy, fusing art and nature — from the Jameos del Agua to the Mirador del Río, including his house-studio carved into volcanic bubbles of the Taro de Tahíche— still shapes Lanzarote's visual identity and its model of tourist development. The César Manrique Foundation, housed in his former home, continues to disseminate his work and his vision of harmony between humankind and the natural environment.
