Roque de Garachico lies in the municipality of Garachico. Its conservation rules describe a rock completely surrounded by the sea, composed mainly of basic igneous materials. [1]
Covering five hectares and reaching 73 metres at its northern end, the rock is a distinctive feature of Garachico’s coast. It was protected as a natural site of national interest in 1987 and reclassified as a natural monument in 1994. The 2009 conservation rules highlighted both its geological character and its importance for birds. [1]
A cross stands at its highest point, reached by an old path. The tradition of decorating it with greenery during festivities was recorded in the conservation rules. The 2009 document specifically mentioned the May Cross celebration, Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the San Roque pilgrimage, balancing this local custom with care for the rock’s plants and wildlife.
