Teobaldo Power y Lugo-Viña was a composer and pianist born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1848.

Early life

Teobaldo Power y Lugo-Viña was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 6 January 1848. He died in Madrid on 16 May 1884. He was a composer, pianist and concert performer, with training and professional activity outside the islands.

Historical role

His best-known work is Cantos Canarios, a composition that adapts fragments of Canarian popular airs to a classical language, premiered in August 1880 at the Philharmonic Society.

Legacy

In 1882 he obtained the piano chair at the Escuela Nacional de Música in Madrid and the post of second organist of the Royal Chapel. The official melody of the Canary Islands anthem, established by Law 20/2003, comes from the Arrorró of Cantos Canarios.
