Teobaldo Power

Teobaldo Power y Lugo-Viña was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 6 January 1848. He died in Madrid on 16 May 1884. Museos de Tenerife presents him as a composer, pianist and concert performer, with training and professional activity outside the islands.

His most cited work is Cantos Canarios, a composition that adapts fragments of Canarian popular airs to a classical language. Institutional sources place the premiere of the work in August 1880; BienMeSabe specifies 5 August at the Philharmonic Society.

In 1882 he obtained the piano chair at the Escuela Nacional de Música in Madrid and the post of second organist of the Royal Chapel. Law 20/2003 on the Canary Islands anthem confirms that the official melody comes from the Arrorró of Cantos Canarios.
