Enamel artist, visual artist and art critic
Maud Bonneaud, born Madeleine Annette Bonneaud in Limoges in 1921, was a French enamel artist, visual artist and art critic associated with Surrealism. She settled in Tenerife in the 1950s and died in Madrid in 1991.
Bonneaud earned a degree in Letters from the University of Poitiers in 1941. The Government of the Canary Islands' Artistas canarias guide documents her early connection with French Surrealist circles and the start, around 1945, of an experimental enamel practice. This technique remained central to her work alongside drawing, writing, design and staging.
Her arrival in Tenerife in the 1950s connected her career with an island cultural network associated with Eduardo Westerdahl. The initiatives and contacts she developed from then on contributed to the circulation of ideas, works and artists in the Canarian context; the 2024 institutional source presents her as a French Surrealist based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and highlights her enamel work.
Bonneaud's work is held by TEA, the CAAM, Casa de Colón, the Museo Reina Sofía and other institutions. TEA devoted a retrospective exhibition to her, and in 2024 the Government of the Canary Islands published a monograph on her in Biblioteca de Artistas de Canarias. These actions document an institutional reception recognising both her works and cultural role.
