First Count of La Gomera

A nobleman of the Herrera-Peraza house, he was first Count of La Gomera and lord of El Hierro, a central figure in seigneurial power on the non-royal islands.

Historical role

Guillén Peraza de Ayala is key to understanding the islands that did not fall under direct royal administration. His county of La Gomera and lordship of El Hierro preserved a political logic different from Tenerife, La Palma or Gran Canaria: family power, seigneurial jurisdiction and constant negotiation with the Crown. His career illustrates the persistence of noble structures within the early modern archipelago.
