Second adelantado of the Canaries

Son of Alonso Fernández de Lugo, he inherited the Canarian adelantamiento and governed Tenerife and La Palma before moving to Santa Marta in the Atlantic expansion into America.

Historical role

Pedro Fernández de Lugo embodies the second generation of adelantado power. After the conquest, his government in Tenerife and La Palma extended the Lugo family's authority, but it also opened an American path: his move to Santa Marta directly connected the Canarian experience of conquest, settlement and government with colonial enterprises in the Caribbean and Tierra Firme.
