Musician, journalist and politician
Elfidio Alonso Quintero is a musician, composer, journalist and politician from La Laguna, founder of Los Sabandeños and former mayor of San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
Elfidio Alonso Quintero was born on 11 August 1935 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The son of the journalist and Republican deputy Elfidio Alonso Rodríguez and Asunción Quintero, he studied Law and Journalism at the University of La Laguna, where he later taught social communication.
His name is closely tied to Los Sabandeños, the group he founded and led, turning Canarian folklore into a cultural reference with national and international reach. As a musician, composer and cultural promoter, he worked to recover the islands' traditional repertoire and adapt it for new audiences.
Alongside his cultural and journalistic activity, he pursued a political career in Canarian nationalism. He was mayor of San Cristóbal de La Laguna from 1987 to 1991 and from 1993 to 1999, and represented Tenerife in the Parliament of the Canary Islands from 1999 to 2003. This entry refers to the son; his father, Elfidio Alonso Rodríguez, has a separate career as a journalist, Second Republic deputy and Republican exile.
