Elena Lecuona Monteverde is a painter born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1944. Trained at Madrid's Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, she has developed an extensive exhibition career in the Canary Islands, mainland Spain and international circuits, with figurative painting of symbolic imagination and strong chromatic intensity.
Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Elena Lecuona spent her childhood and youth in Madrid. She studied Fine Arts at the Academia de San Fernando and continued her training as an artist supported by the Fundación Rodríguez Acosta in Granada. The Real Academia Canaria de Bellas Artes places the beginning of her exhibiting activity after those studies, in the second half of the 1960s.
She then took part in competitions, salons and group and solo exhibitions in Spain and abroad. Her venues include the Ateneo de La Laguna, Círculo de Bellas Artes de Tenerife, Sala Conca, Madrid institutions and salons for young artists in Paris and Brussels. In the Canarian context of the 1970s, she was one of the artists who maintained a continuous public career in a scene with few women.
Her painting works with portraits, still lifes and imaginary figures through a figurative language incorporating Surrealism, Symbolism and a baroque sensibility for colour and detail. Her awards include prizes in National Fine Arts Exhibitions, the Cabildo de Tenerife Prize and the RACBA Magister Prize for Painting in 2017. Since 2018 she has been a corresponding member of that institution.
