Marquis of Lanzarote

First Count and Marquis of Lanzarote, lord of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and a military figure involved in the Atlantic defence of the Spanish Monarchy.

Historical role

Agustín de Herrera y Rojas turned the eastern lordship into a political actor of Atlantic scale. From Lanzarote and Fuerteventura he took part in military, noble and commercial networks connected with island defence, the Portuguese world, North Africa and the Atlantic. His titles of count and marquis show the rise of a seigneurial house whose influence remained decisive well into the sixteenth century.
