The outbreak began in La Laguna around Corpus Christi in 1582 and spread to Santa Cruz and other parts of Tenerife. Historical estimates cited by the Canary Institute of Bioanthropology place deaths at between 7,500 and 9,000 in the La Laguna–Santa Cruz area alone; the epidemic subsided in 1583.
