Historical Figures

On 11 July 1808, in response to the crisis caused by the Napoleonic occupation, a General Council meeting in La Laguna agreed to create a Supreme Provincial Junta and provisionally assume the monarch’s delegated powers. The new authority immediately triggered a dispute over legitimacy with the Royal Court and the Council of Gran Canaria. This milestone specifies the Canarian political response to the Peninsular War.
