On 21 September 1927, by Royal Decree, the University of La Laguna was created as the twelfth Spanish university district, heir to the old Universidad Literaria de San Fernando founded in La Laguna in 1816-1817 and closed in 1845. It was the first university established in the Canary Islands and became an engine of intellectual, scientific and social development for the archipelago. Its creation responded to decades of island demands for a higher education institution of their own, after years in which Canarian university studies depended on the Sección Universitaria de Canarias attached to Seville (1913).
