Garajonay National Park is created in La Gomera to protect the Canarian laurel forest.

On 25 March 1981, Law 3/1981 creating Garajonay National Park in the heart of the island of La Gomera was promulgated, published in the BOE two days later. The law protected the largest remnant of Canarian laurel forest, the ancient humid subtropical forest that covered the massif before the Castilian conquest and survives thanks to the trade winds. In 1986, UNESCO inscribed the park on the World Heritage List, recognising its exceptional natural value, and since then the Garajonay forest has been an emblem of Gomera identity.
