The Norman expedition led by Jean de Béthencourt and Gadifer de La Salle had begun in 1402. In 1405, Guise and Ayose, rulers of Maxorata and Jandía, accepted Béthencourt as lord and were baptised; the island was incorporated into Castilian rule.
