Los Roques de Salmor and the surrounding tidal reefs form the strict nature reserve off northern El Hierro. Its management plan highlights the rock landscape and the seabirds that nest there. [1]
Protection of Salmor began in 1987 within the Gorreta y Salmor natural area. In 1994, the rocks were reclassified as a strict nature reserve. After El Hierro became a Biosphere Reserve in 2000, this site formed part of one of its core zones. [1]
Roque Chico has a particular place in the recovery of El Hierro’s giant lizard. The management plan published in 2003 already recorded the species’ introduction to the rock and identified its population as a reason for protection. This documents a stage in the conservation programme without establishing how many individuals live there today. [1]
