The Canary Islands Government includes Isla de Lobos among the five islets in its general archipelago inventory and lists it with Fuerteventura. Its published area is derived from the coastline in the 2011 topographic map. [1]

La Calera beach is home to Lobos 1, an archaeological site systematically investigated since 2012. Researchers from the island councils of Fuerteventura and Tenerife and the University of La Laguna have identified a purple-dye workshop dating to the late Roman Republic and early Empire. Large shell deposits attest to the processing of muricids, the marine molluscs used to obtain the dye. [2]

The finds also shed light on the workers’ daily lives. Alongside dye-making tools, archaeologists recovered storage amphorae, cooking and table pottery, architectural remains and a large refuse deposit. By 2024, six large shell middens had been identified, while excavation and ground-penetrating radar surveys continued to establish the workshop’s extent. [2]
