María Mérida

María Mérida, born in Valverde, El Hierro, was one of the most recognisable voices of Canarian folklore. Known as the lady of Canarian song, she brought to the stage a repertory deeply tied to the archipelago's popular memory.

Her career helped dignify traditional song and project it beyond local festive contexts. Her interpretation, her connection with El Hierro and her place in Canarian cultural life made her a reference for generations of singers.

She died in 2022. Her figure highlights the role of women's voices in preserving and transmitting Canarian folklore.
