A Dominican friar and historian, he published in 1594 a work on Our Lady of Candelaria that preserves one of the most cited early descriptions of Tenerife and the Guanches.

Historical role

Fray Alonso de Espinosa matters because his work combines devotion, local history and Indigenous memory. In writing about Our Lady of Candelaria, he recorded information about Tenerife, its former inhabitants and the religious transformation after the conquest. Although his perspective belongs to the spiritual framework of his time, his text remains an indispensable early source for studying Guanche society and its colonial reception.
