The 1936 military uprising spreads from the Canary Islands.

In July 1936, Francisco Franco, then military commander of the Canary Islands, travelled from Tenerife to Gran Canaria and departed for North Africa to take command of the rebel units. The coup ushered in political repression across the archipelago.
