Venezuela becomes the principal destination of a new wave of mass emigration from the Canary Islands.

An estimated 8,000 people emigrated from the Canary Islands to Venezuela between 1948 and 1952, followed by about 70,000 between 1952 and 1958. Some early departures were clandestine voyages aboard the so-called ghost ships. The cycle did not begin in 1940 and was not directed generically towards all of Latin America.
