Spain's accession to the European Economic Community took effect on 1 January 1986. That year's Canary Islands budget already provided for the autonomous community's participation in the European Regional Development Fund, the European Social Fund and the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund, although the amounts had not yet been determined.
