The euro becomes the currency of Spain and therefore of the Canary Islands.

On 1 January 1999, the euro became the currency of Spain and the other participating states, with irrevocably fixed conversion rates. At first it was used for accounting and electronic transactions; euro banknotes and coins entered circulation on 1 January 2002.
