Nivaria Tejera was a writer and poet born in Cienfuegos in 1929, connected from childhood with Tenerife and with an Atlantic literature spanning Cuba, the Canary Islands and Parisian exile.
Nivaria Tejera was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, on 30 September 1929. The Academia Canaria de la Lengua and the Government of the Canary Islands document her childhood in Tenerife, an experience that forms part of her biographical and literary relationship with the archipelago.
Her novel Sonámbulo del sol received Seix Barral's Biblioteca Breve Prize in 1971. The Canary Islands Government places her work in a network of exchanges between Hispanic American, Canarian and Macaronesian literatures.
This perspective avoids reducing her to a single national category: her career connects Cuba, Tenerife and Paris. Her inclusion rests on a concrete Canarian link and the Atlantic circulation of her work.
