Ángel Guimerá y Jorge was a playwright, poet and writer born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1845 and deceased in Barcelona in 1924. In Catalonia he developed work central to Catalan-language theatre with wide international reach.
Ángel Guimerá was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 6 May 1845. According to the National Library of Spain, his family moved to Catalonia in 1853, first to El Vendrell and then to Barcelona. This movement explains why his literary and political activity developed mainly in the Catalan sphere, without erasing his Canarian birthplace.
He joined the Catalan literary movement and entered La Jove Catalunya in 1870. The BNE records the founding of the magazine La Renaixença in 1871, prizes at the Jocs Florals between 1875 and 1877, and the premiere of Gala Placidia in 1879. These milestones trace a path from poetry and journalism to theatre.
Works such as Mar i cel, Maria Rosa, Terra baixa and La filla del mar consolidated his stage reception. In 1895 he was elected president of the Ateneo de Barcelona and in 1911 an honorary member of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans. Museos de Tenerife's CEDOCAM devoted a monograph to him in 2024 for the centenary of his death, while Santa Cruz de Tenerife's Teatro Guimerá publicly retains his name as part of this shared memory.
