Indie rock and grunge band
The Amaroses was a Gran Canaria indie rock, grunge and garage band that won La Caja Sonora 2010 and became linked to the island’s early-decade alternative scene.
The La Caja Sonora report places the project’s origin in Gran Canaria with Rodrigo Furtado Leite and Demelza Cruz, first as an acoustic duo in 2009 and later as an electric line-up with Félix Henríquez and Coré Ruiz at the end of that year. The group won the fourth La Caja Sonora in 2010. Muzikalia documented the EP Creating a Monster that same year, and MondoSonoro reported in 2011 on their collaboration with Luke Donovan while they prepared their first studio album.
Its importance lies in representing a Gran Canaria route into early-2010s indie rock, away from commercial pop and with an aesthetic tied to grunge and garage rock. The La Caja Sonora win and attention from MondoSonoro and Muzikalia show a local alternative scene able to connect prizes, small labels and external collaborations.
Sources describe a guitar-driven electric base indebted to 1990s grunge, with lead voice and moments of dark blues, garage and alt folk. The group’s digital discography preserves that range through labels such as alternative, garage, grunge, rock and alt folk.
The Amaroses’ transmission remains in demos, an EP, digital release and connections with Creative Commons projects such as Mudrose. Its presence expands the map of Gran Canaria bands towards a scene of venues, contests and self-release that does not depend on the conventional music industry.
Rodrigo Leite, Dao and Demelza Cruz start the project in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The band wins the fourth La Caja Sonora contest.
