Popular music group
Founded in Puerto del Rosario in 1988 from the Popular University’s Folklore Workshop, Tabajoste has developed a musical approach centred on Fuerteventura tradition, vocal and instrumental arrangements, and the dissemination of the island’s repertory.
The group was formed in Puerto del Rosario in 1988 as a continuation of the Popular University’s Folklore Workshop. Some participants from the 1985/86 and 1986/87 courses decided to continue playing together and became the core of the new ensemble, which made its public debut in 1989 at the former Cine Marga. Its name comes from the tabajoste, the earthenware vessel traditionally used in Fuerteventura to collect milk while goats were being milked.
Tabajoste represents a path for renewing Fuerteventura’s popular music that grew out of community education. Its continuity has enabled numerous instrumentalists and singers to take part, while its recordings preserve traditional repertory and compositions connected with the island’s landscape and memory. Puerto del Rosario City Council chose the group to deliver the opening address for the 2017 Fiestas del Rosario and highlighted its three decades on stage.
The ensemble concentrates on musical performance and does not maintain a permanent dance section. This configuration favours detailed work with voices, strings and percussion, as well as original arrangements. Its recordings include isas, Fuerteventura malagueñas and polkas, seguidillas, waltzes, berlinas, ballads, and Christmas repertory from the Canary Islands and other Atlantic territories.
Tabajoste passes on its legacy by welcoming instrumentalists and singers, making recordings, and maintaining a public programme of concerts, festivals and folklore gatherings. Its Christmas concerts have become a regular event in Puerto del Rosario, and the ensemble has taken part in tributes to its founder, Marcos Sánchez “Marcos el Zurdo”, remembered as a teacher, researcher and performer who helped establish Fuerteventura’s music schools.
The group grows out of the Popular University’s Folklore Workshop and makes its debut at Cine Marga.
It releases its first recording documented by the National Library of Spain.
It expands its discography with Paisaje and Paisaje Fuerteventura.
It takes part in the fourth Marcos el Zurdo gathering and releases Navidad al calor de un volcán.
The musical career begun in 1988 reaches the three-decade mark.
