Founded in Telde in 1969 and led throughout its career by Antonio Cejudo, Los Faycanes has built a repertory linking Canarian folklore, original songwriting and Latin American music.
Los Faycanes made its public debut in Telde in 1969. Led by Antonio Cejudo, the ensemble remained continuously active for more than half a century, performed within and beyond Gran Canaria and developed an extensive recording career. Its name refers to the faycanes of Gran Canaria’s Indigenous society and expresses the group’s connection with Telde.
Its longevity has made the group a reference point for popular culture in Telde. Its repertory has carried the names of Telde and Gran Canaria to many stages, combining the defence of musical folklore with a distinctive voice recognised by the Gran Canaria Island Council through the Roque Nublo award.
Los Faycanes works with voices, string instruments and percussion. Its concerts bring together isas, folías, polkas and instrumental pieces with Latin American songs and compositions devoted to Canarian places, people and memories. Choral and instrumental arrangements seek a recognisable sound without confining the repertory to a single formula.
The group’s continuity, recordings and performances in squares, theatres, radio and television have introduced several generations to both traditional repertories and new songs rooted in the Canary Islands. The ensemble also preserves a material memory of records, costumes, photographs and objects connected with its history.
