Folk ensemble
Hautacuperche was founded on La Gomera in 1992 to keep traditional songs and dances alive; its repertory combines baile del tambor, music from across the islands, habaneras and original work.
Agrupación Folclórica Hautacuperche was founded in spring 1992 by a group of people on La Gomera with a shared cultural concern. Their initial purpose was to ensure the continuity of the island’s own songs and dances. Three decades later, the Cabildo of La Gomera documented an ensemble of around forty people across its instrumental and dance sections.
Hautacuperche has helped give Gomera folklore continuing stage and community life. It has presented this repertory throughout the archipelago and mainland Spain while sustaining regular activity on the island. Its annual festival and Christmas-song gathering provide recurring meeting points for ensembles and audiences.
Baile del tambor holds a central place alongside music and dance from other islands. The repertory also includes habaneras, medleys and compositions with original music and lyrics. This range presents Gomera’s distinctiveness within a shared Canarian musical landscape.
The ensemble brings music and dance together in one structure, allowing repertories, steps and accompaniment practices to be passed on as a whole. Its continuing festivals and large membership turn each performance into a practical space for collective learning.
