Punk-rock band
Ataúd Vacante is a Tenerife punk-rock band that emerged in 1983 and is recognised by La Fonoteca as one of Canarian rock’s reference points.
La Fonoteca places Ataúd Vacante’s formation in November 1983, between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna, with Silver, Pistol, Fafe and Tin. The debut came in February 1984 at the Graffiti pub in Puerto de la Cruz. In 1986 they recorded Lenguaje Abierto, in 1987 they released Nichiquitaunamosca and later worked with Ja Ja Records and Manzana on records such as Chorros de Amor and En Facturation.
Its importance lies in taking Tenerife punk rock to an island-wide and mainland dimension, with Canarian performances, television appearances and a tour outside the archipelago documented by La Fonoteca. The entry also links the 1980s punk scene with Canarian labels and later rock circuits.
The early repertory combined punk energy, rock guitars and a wish for continuous live sets without long pauses between songs. Sources describe an evolution from punk roughness towards broader rock, with pop and hip-hop elements in the Chorros de Amor period without abandoning the group’s stage identity.
Its legacy is preserved through recordings, reissues, books and the memory of concerts shared with other Canarian bands such as Escorbuto Crónico, Moral Femenina, Marca Acmé and Krull. The group’s history documents how Canarian alternative rock sought circulation between islands and on the mainland before digital normalisation.
