Norman nobleman who initiated the conquest of the Canary Islands in 1402. He conquered Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro, establishing the foundations of the Canarian lordship.

1402 Beginning of the European conquest with Jean de Béthencourt's expedition to Lanzarote. 1404 Béthencourt and Gadifer found Betancuria, the first capital of Fuerteventura. 1405 Conquest of Fuerteventura by Jean de Béthencourt.
